Twelve Tenses, One Underlying Logic
English tenses look intimidating in a list — twelve of them, each with its own name and its own form — but they're built from just a few repeating pieces: simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous, applied across past, present, and future. Once that pattern clicks, tenses stop feeling like twelve separate rules and start feeling like one rule applied three ways.
The tense that trips up most learners isn't a complicated one — it's usually present perfect ("I have finished") versus simple past ("I finished"), because many languages don't make this same distinction. English uses present perfect for actions connected to now, and simple past for actions clearly finished in the past with a specific time mentioned.
This quiz mixes tenses deliberately rather than testing one at a time, because that's exactly how tenses appear in real writing and conversation — a single paragraph might naturally combine past, present perfect, and future within just a few sentences.
If a particular tense keeps tripping you up, don't just memorise the form — write three of your own example sentences using it about your actual day, since personal, meaningful examples stick far better than textbook ones. Our Active and Passive Voice Quiz applies these same tenses in a different structure.
