The Small Words That Cause Disproportionately Large Mistakes
Prepositions like "in," "on," "at," and "for" are some of the shortest words in English, and also some of the most frequently misused — often because their correct use doesn't follow a single logical rule, but instead depends on fixed expressions that simply have to be learned ("interested in," not "interested on" or "interested at").
Learners whose first language handles location, time, or direction differently often struggle most here, since direct translation rarely works. English uses "on Monday" but "in June" and "at noon" — three different prepositions for time, with no single rule connecting them, just usage that has to be memorised through exposure.
This quiz focuses on the preposition combinations that come up most often — time, place, and fixed phrases with verbs and adjectives ("good at," "afraid of," "depend on") — since these account for the vast majority of real preposition mistakes in everyday writing and speech.
Rather than memorising rules, try memorising the whole phrase as one unit — "good at" as a single chunk, not "good" plus a preposition you have to choose separately. Since articles are tested in a similarly example-driven way, our Articles Quiz uses the same approach.
